Connect with someone who’s had a similar blood cancer experience

Sometimes during your cancer experience you may feel alone, even misunderstood, by people who love you. Fortunately, there are people who do understand exactly what you’re going through – compassionate individuals with a similar blood cancer experience who can connect with you by phone.

Received a blood cancer diagnosis?

Whether you’re recently diagnosed, in treatment, post-cancer or living with a chronic blood cancer, we can match you with a trained volunteer (peer) with same blood cancer, treatment, age or a life situation for which you are seeking support.

Caring for a loved one with a blood cancer?

As a caregiver of a young or older child, a spouse, parent or sibling with a blood cancer diagnosis, you are focused on supporting your loved one. But you need and deserve support, too, to help you most effectively care for your loved one. We can connect you with another caregiver who’s been through a similar blood cancer experience.

How First Connection works

When you sign up for a First Connection match, you will be matched with a trained volunteer (peer) who has firsthand experience with a blood cancer diagnosis or has cared for a loved one with a blood cancer.

This is a match tailored to your needs, determined by your age, type of diagnosis, type of treatment, life stage, or the issue that’s most concerning to you right now.

All First Connection volunteer peers are formally trained to listen and offer a deep level of understanding and insight by sharing their own experience. Talking to a peer can reassure you about what’s ahead.

All contact is by phone, and the support is short-term. There is no fee to participate in this program.

I found my volunteer to be very easy to speak with and open up to. I really appreciate her taking the time to share her story and her experience and the patience to listen to me and where I am at.

Learning what [my volunteer] went through helped us understand what the stem cell transplant process might be like. Reading about studies is one thing, but getting to talk to someone is much more helpful.

We connected on so many levels, we shared, we laughed, we lamented. Honestly the experience was so therapeutic.
