The causes of blood cancers – What we know

Join us for a live presentation from Dr. John Dick who will explain how his research into the causes of blood cancers holds the promise for improved treatments and quality of life for Canadians affected by blood cancers.

Dr. Dick is one of Canada’s pioneering scientists in the field of “cancer stem cells” – a revolutionary idea that tells us that not all cancer cells are the same. Dr. Dick made the first discovery of leukemia stem cells in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). His research has provided important insights into the understanding, diagnosis and treatment of AML.

Cancer stem cells act like parent cells from which all other cancer develop, fuelling uncontrolled growth of certain types of cancer. Since Dr. Dick’s discovery, other researchers have found cancer-causing stem cells in many other cancers.
