Blood cancer quality of life research supported by Steele Auto Group

While dedicated researchers continue to seek cures for all blood cancers, they are also discovering ways to improve the quality of life of individuals of all ages impacted by a blood cancer.

Great research takes solid funding; The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC) is fortunate to have the support of Steele Auto Group (SAG) headquartered in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. As the first ever corporate team to raise more than $500,000 in a single event for LLSC (the annual nationwide Light The Night event), SAG is being recognized as the official partner of the 2023 LLSC Blood Cancer Quality of Life research grant program.

“We are honoured to support the vital research into quality of life for people impacted by a blood cancer through the 2023 grant program of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada,” says Kim Day, Chief Operating Officer, Steele Auto Group, shown in this group photo in the back row holding the appreciation plaque presented by LLSC.

In 2023, SAG’s 59 dealerships in the Atlantic region raised more than $310,000 through various activities (including the auction of a rare Porsche) and just over $191,000 in their “teddy bear campaign” that runs from Labour Day to Light The Night in mid-October. Now in its 10th year, the teddy bear campaign sees $50 from the sale of every new and used vehicle at SAG Canada going to the LLSC mission, including for life-saving research.

Since 2015, Steele Auto Group has fundraised more than $1.7 million for the LLSC.

An in- person celebration took place in Halifax at SAG headquarters, which will include a talk by LLSC Research Program Lead, Paul O’Connell.

“In 2023, five Blood Cancer Quality of Life grants were awarded for a total commitment of almost $700,000,” he says. “The huge impact that Steele’s contribution has made to this vital research is clear.”

The event included a panel discussion made up of individuals who understand the Blood Cancer Quality of Life Grant the best - caregivers to those living with a blood cancer. Three mothers, Brenda Murchison, Margot Dietrich, Madeleine Myers, as well as the spouse of a blood cancer survivor, Trudy Dyer, shared why mental health is so important for people impacted by blood cancer.
